Digestive System is a set of multiple organs that work synergistically in order to perform vital functions for our body. This fascinating “machinery” transforms food we eat into small particles that our bodies use as fuel, to rebuild and to initiate multiple chemical reactions which promote life. Isn’t that brilliant?

The whole digestive process is very complicated and involves thousands of simultaneous reactions, but let me guide you though this process and simplifying it for you.

The Digestive process begins with your anticipation. The more you think about food and visualise or smell it, the more chemicals are activated in your body signalling that soon the digestive process will begin. These chemicals start sending messages to the digestive organs to prepare them for food.

Salivary glands are next to activate the digestive process, by increasing the saliva production.

Saliva has key enzymes that are responsible for carbohydrate and fat digestion. 
Before swallowing your food should be chewed until moist as this facilitate further digestive processes.

Next the food goes through the oesophagus and reaches the stomach.

In the stomach the food stays anytime between 1h and 4h, depending on the meal size and its composition. Stomach juices or Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) break down the food and acts as an anitiparasite barrier. The HCL acid concentration is crucial for proper digestion and nutrients activations, one of the most important is B12 absorption.

While the food is in the stomach your gall bladder collects and stores bile, which will aid digestion, absorption of fats and fat soluble vitamins.

When the food reaches the small intestine the gall bladder and pancreas secrete enzymes and other cofactors to further break down the food and neutralise acidity.

Then the food reaches the large intestines where most of your gut bacteria lives. The food is further processed by your bacteria and the fat soluble compounds and water is absorbed. The digestive process terminate here, in the large intestine.
